DL Loves 2014 Winners: Album 3

This has to be the funnest object we came across – and experienced – during design week. Hung from a 25-foot beam in her shared workshop in the Junction, Lauren Reed’s two-seater swing is made of maple, traditionally knotted marine rope and Poplar oversized beads for handles. Tagged by Tory Healy.

Sisley Leung is a designer, architectural technologist, illustrator, and model maker. For Gladstone Hotel’s Come Up To My Room, she crafted Creatures of Comfort – a miniature deconstructed home made of ash using model-making tools. This piece was installed upstairs; downstairs, her tiny gondolas were strung above the staircase and in the café, a mini bistro seen was set in a bell jar on the bar. Tagged by Tory Healy.

Part of Diesel’s ongoing collab with Scavolini, the Successful Living kitchen on display at IDS is made up of separate modules that assemble freely with each other. Featuring glass doors and large, shapely handles with a used-metal effect, the idea behind the kitchen system is a living environment that combines vintage soul with industrial details. Part of the Interior Design Show’s See the Light exhibit, MSDS’s Continuous Monument is a mix of two of our favourite things. Inspired by Foscarini’s ahead-of-the-curve and sometimes mind-boggling fixtures, the Toronto designers sourced these white and copper-coloured Diesel by Foscarini pendants from YLighting. They wrapped the black and white room and furniture in vinyl to create a tiled look, and the mirrors create an infinite view of squares and illuminated circles. Tagged by Tory Healy.

Named the Influence Milano, Oceania’s striking black tub at the Interior Design Show is a bold choice. All their baths are made with high-performance cast acrylic reinforced with 3/8-inch high impact resin, and the shell surface is made of Lucite acrylic laminated with an average of 3/8-inch high impact waterproof resin. Weavers Art has established itself as a go-to rug store for those looking for lavish, contemporary area rugs in the city, and this rug is a good example of why. Made of Tibetan wool and Chinese silk, the Soho area rug’s collision of colours recalled impressionist paintings, blurred pixels and weathered painted steel. Tagged by Tory Healy.

Lemon yellow patio furniture is a sunny set made even better thanks to how stress-free it is to care for. Jardin de Ville used Sunbrella upholstery that’s easy to put on and take off with zippers on the smart Blow-Up sofa. It wasn’t the overload of cuteness that stopped us in our tracks at IDS. It was the aesthetic of the tiny children’s play furniture, the details, and how well each piece is made. Scaled up, these contemporary appliance and furnishing replicas would look great in an adult home.The custom Kid’s Play Kitchens by Kid-Chen Co. are built by Mike Collier and made of maple plywood and finished with non-toxic, zero VOC paint. The Pipano bench by German architect and artist Jürgen Mayer-Hermann is made of Caesarstone’s 4120 Raven. First shown at Art Basel in December, the principal of Berlin-based architect firm J. Mayer H. selects Caesarstone surfaces and mills them to these lattice-like formations. Tagged by Tory Healy.

In an apartment above bar 751 on Queen West, Kiran Thind and Rodrigo Andrade curated the work of 12 creatives, a motley crew bringing together printmaking, illustration, furniture design, lighting and more. Of special note is Steve Wallin’s reclaimed oak and powder-coated steel Oblique table. The top features beveled edges, beautiful reveals and smooth inlays for writing instruments while the bright orange paint calls attention to the architectural lines on the base. Urban Factors (300 seconds) is an installation by Toronto’s SUMO Project exhibited in their studio space in Kensington Market. The piece features three projections showing five films in total, all capturing an aspect of the city’s architecture and landscape. Pictured is a subway on the Bloor Street Viaduct. We want a seat on furniture designer Christopher Solar’s Number 7 Rocker and matching Lounge chair. Exhibited at IDS’s Studio North, the chairs’ cushions are upholstered in 100 per cent Kvadrat wool, balanced on walnut and oiled white oak frames. Tagged by Diane Chan.

Stylegarage’s Trinity bed was a great lay at the Interior Design Show. The headboard and floating nightstands are made of slats of maple, birch, walnut, oak, cherry and Douglas fir wood, keeping with the brand’s sustainable furnishings. Tagged by Tory Healy.

Part of Caesarstone’s Islands installation at IDS, this ping pong table is made of manufactured Quartz that’s been milled down from two centimetres to two millimetres around the edges with a mutter on a radius cut. The ale pine mist colour is part of the Supernatural Collection, with specific tooling used to get the shiny finish. Tagged by Arta Ghanbari.

Though furniture maker Reed Hansuld has recently stationed in Brooklyn from Toronto, the Canadian aesthetic still remains in each of his pieces. This walnut and wenge laminated barstool shows the heirloom quality of craftsmanship that’s true to his furnishings. It takes almost 30 hours to make each one of these stools. At the end of a long day at the Interior Design Show, the sight of this lavish and minimal bath by Victoria + Albert was just what we needed. The plush backrest, oak laminate rack built to hold your wine and sweets, and just enough room to spread your legs and unwind – we fell in love. Made of volcanic limestone, the rimless ios bathtub is a best bet where floor space is of essence. Tagged by Arta Ghanbari.

It was the discreet surrounding storage and LED lit headboard that caught our eye here. Available in sealed walnut, cherry and white oak, Positive Space’s multifunctional bed is clad in German manufacturer Blum’s hardware and built in Canada.
